Department of Microbiology
Welcome to the Department of Microbiology, Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB). The vision of the Bachelors of Science (Honors) program in Microbiology is “To establish a program of student-centered learning and quality professional research in life sciences, concentrating on microbiology, with a commitment to practical outcomes, scholarly engagement, integral humanism, global citizenship, community service, and moral responsibility”. This program obtained approval from the UGC of Bangladesh in 2024 as a new discipline under the Faculty of Biological Science at NDUB and now open for admission from Fall 2024. Microbiology is a modern subject which encompasses a number of other important disciplines like food and environmental microbiology, medical microbiology, pathology, biochemistry, immunology, serology, virology, genetics, bioinformatics etc. After completion of their study, graduates will be able to conduct research in a range of applied areas viz. genetic engineering using CRISPR-Cas9 technology, stem cell research, metabolic engineering, metagenomics, metabolomics, virology etc. that will enable them to discover and contribute new knowledge in science.
We have full time and adjunct faculty members who obtained their Ph. D. from developed countries and also experience in teaching and research at Dhaka University and other National or International research organizations. The Department provides excellent laboratory facilities and we have five well equipped laboratories for the students and microbiological research. Outcome Based Education Curriculum (OBEC) is followed for students’ learning which equip students with the required skill sets for the global market. Students will need to complete 135 credit hours in Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Microbiology program in four year/eight semesters. Notre Dame University believes in quality education for all students for their future life so that they are transformed to human resources, future workforce and global citizen to meet the challenges of existing and emerging infectious diseases and microbial technology of the 21st century.
Thank you for your interest in the Department of Microbiology at NDUB.

About the department
Department of Microbiology at Notre Dame University Bangladesh started its journey in June 2024 and now open for admission in Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Microbiology. This new department is dedicated to provide top-notch education in microbiology to interested learners. The Department’s mission is to educate learners through student centered learning and enquiry- based research in microbiology. The courses offered in this program create a bridge between basic research and the applications integrating the fields like microbiology, genetics, ecology, cell biology, physiology, biotechnology and bioinformatics. Thus, prepare students for multiple career paths of their choice. Variety of learning and teaching methods/approaches e.g. group discussion, debate, lecture, laboratory experiments, seminars, journal clubs etc. are explored to enhance learning in diverse students and to enable them to establish a strong basis in research techniques and concepts. As a result, the students can compete in existing and emerging interdisciplinary research studies. Our qualified and experienced faculty members are dedicated for maintaining congenial learning and teaching environment in the department with great success by utilizing their advanced education, training and expertise.
Courses offered by the department are:
Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Microbiology
Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Microbiology
Objectives of the department
Microbiology is a multidisciplinary subject where students have a wide range of options to study from fundamentals concepts to applied microbiological research including: general microbiology, microbial ecology and diversity, environmental microbiology, food microbiology, indusial microbiology, microbial biotechnology, microbial metabolism, microbial genetics, molecular biology, clinical microbiology and pathology, immunology, virology, parasitology, epidemiology and other allied courses. After completion of the undergraduate program, BS in Microbiology, graduates enter in diverse fields related to their background in academic institutions, various industries and health sectors. The trained graduates of microbiology will play a vital role in the sustainable development in national economic growth and would bring qualitative changes in the microbiological areas in the national, regional and global society. The practical training and fieldwork in the curriculum will provide hands-on experience in different fields of microbiological, biotechnological and health sciences. It will also create awareness about public health and safety. The Department of Microbiology will offer four-year Bachelor of Science Honors in Microbiology degree following the guidelines of UGC of Bangladesh and Bangladesh National Qualification Framework.
Graduates of the newly established Department of Microbiology at NDUB will find a multitude of exciting career opportunities in various fields. Equipped with knowledge from our comprehensive curriculum and hands-on experience in our state-of-the-art laboratories, students will be well-prepared for roles in healthcare as clinical microbiologists, in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology as research scientists and quality control analysts, and in environmental science as specialists in microbial ecology and bioremediation.
Our department’s cutting-edge facilities, including multiple advanced laboratories for molecular biology, immunology, and microbial genetics, provide students with the skills and expertise needed to excel in both academic and industry settings. Additionally, our strong emphasis on research and innovation prepares graduates for careers in academic institutions, government agencies, and private research organizations. By addressing critical global challenges in health, agriculture, and environmental sustainability, our graduates will be at the forefront of scientific advancements and public health initiatives.
Graduates of the newly established Department of Microbiology at NDUB will have a wide range of career opportunities, including:
- Clinical Microbiologist: Working in hospitals and diagnostic labs to identify and manage infectious diseases.
- Research Scientist: Conducting groundbreaking research in academic, government, or private research institutions.
- Quality Control Analyst: Ensuring the safety and efficacy of pharmaceutical and biotechnological products.
- Environmental Microbiologist: Addressing environmental challenges through the study of microbial ecology and bioremediation.

CSE Notice
Necessary info on double major, internship/thesis, teaching assistance
Sample necessary informations sample
If a student of Batch 1 or Batch 2 decides to pursue a second major, they will be allowed to do so after they complete their internship program. However, if a student of a subsequent batch (Batch 3 or higher) wishes to pursue another major course, they will have to complete all the required academic courses before beginning their internship program.
Those who have capacity to take 5 courses in each trimester, will be allowed to complete 10 (ten) courses of their Major stream in two trimesters. But those who would find 5 courses in each trimester too much, will take two courses in an extra trimester for their second major after completion of the requirements of the first major stream.
This means, the students of third and the following Batches will have to decide about taking a second major before their internship program and then inform the Chairman of the Department. Only after completing all required courses—for both 1st & 2nd majors—they will they will be allowed to begin their internship program.
Experience shows that most BBA students prefer to follow an internship program. However, if a student wants to do a thesis instead of an internship, they should proceed as follows: Students of 1st and 2nd Batches, seeking to do a thesis, will be allowed to do so, provided they have a satisfactory CGPA and the prior permission from their respective faculty supervisor.
Students of Batches 3 and following will be allowed to take thesis only if they can secure CGPA 3.50 or above.
The BBA graduates of NDUB who seek to enroll for the MBA program at NDUB will be allowed to apply for a Teaching Assistance only if they have a CGPA minimum of 3.80. However, they also have to appear before an interview board and present a demo class as part of the application process.
