Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB) celebrated a landmark event on Saturday with the inauguration of its new Microbiology Department and an elaborate Orientation Ceremony for the incoming Fall 2024 students.
The campus was abuzz with excitement as distinguished guests, faculty, students, and their families gathered to mark this significant occasion.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of Chief Guest Tanvir Shakil Joy, Honorable Member of Parliament for Sirajganj-1 Constituency, and Guest of Honor, Anima Mukti Gomes, Honorable Member of Parliament for Constituency Number 329.
The Chief Guest and the Guest of Honor delivered empowering and inspiring speeches, encouraging the new students to pursue their academic and personal goals with dedication and passion.
Chief Guest Tanvir Shakil said today is a special day for Notre Dame University Bangladesh as it has inaugurated a new department, Microbiology.
Mentioning students, he said, “Those who have enrolled at Notre Dame are among the brightest minds. Your parents have great expectations from you. However, whatever you do, do it with joy and love. Only then will you be truly successful and happy according to your definition. Your own satisfaction is paramount. With science, technology, and integrity, you will construct the smart Bangladesh of tomorrow. I hope that NDUB will also become a leader and set an example for all like Notre Dame College.”
Anima Mukti said, “Microbiology is significant in all aspects of our environment—soil, water, air—and its importance became especially evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. Notre Dame has launched this department with well-equipped lab facilities. I hope that Notre Dame will lead the way in Microbiology in Bangladesh.”
The program was chaired by Honorable Vice Chancellor of NDUB Dr. Fr. Patrick Daniel Gaffney, CSC. Other notable guests included NDUB Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Fr. Charles B. Gordon, CSC, Treasurer Dr. Fr. Subash Adam Pereira, CSC, Proctor Fr. Lawrence N. Das, CSC, Deputy Registrar Fr. Ashim Theotonius Gonsalves, CSC, and Dean Prof. Dr. Aloke Kumar Chakraborty.
The program commenced at 2:30 pm with a warm welcome for the new students who were greeted with flowers and badges. The official proceedings began at 3:00 pm with the hosting of flags and the national anthem.
The Chief Guest, along with the NDUB authority and faculty members, officially inaugurated the Microbiology Department by unfolding the plaque. This was followed by a captivating welcoming dance performed by students and a documentary presentation on Microbiology.
Dr. Fr. Patrick Daniel Gaffney CSC, Vice Chancellor of NDUB, delivered a heartfelt welcoming address, emphasizing the university’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation. He said, “Practically acquiring knowledge is so much essential. Notre Dame tries to ensure it, and it will do so more effectively with the new Microbiology department. Learning is the acquisition of knowledge, and it requires responsibilities. Our students will be proud contributors to this endeavor.”
A special NDUB video presentation showcased the university’s vibrant campus life and achievements.
The faculty introductions, led by Fr. Ashim, and the presentation of NDUB offices by Fr. Badhon Rozario, CSC, highlighted the university’s dedicated and diverse academic community. Senior student Mustafiz Ahad shared his enriching experiences at NDUB, followed by an inspiring speech from new student Nusrat Jahan Toha of the LLB Department.
The program featured various cultural performances, including a recitation by Aditi Sarker and a dynamic dance performance by the students.
The ceremony concluded with a speech by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and crest and gift distributions to the esteemed guests were followed by a vote of thanks from Fr. Ashim.
Mentioning students, Fr. Charles said, “You may often feel that there is a lot to accomplish, but we will not put extra pressure on you. Do everything with passion. Here, you will meet people who will become lifelong friends. You will find something new and have a well-rounded group to support you. So be confident and courageous.”
The event culminated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony and the inauguration of the new Microbiology lab on the 4th floor, symbolizing NDUB’s ongoing commitment to advancing scientific research and education.
