Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB) observed International Mother Language Day on Saturday (February 21) paying profound respects to the heroes who sacrificed their lives to defend Bangla language.
The program commenced with hoisting of the national flag by Vice Chancellor Dr. Fr. Patrick Daniel Gaffney, CSC, Registrar Dr. Bro. Subal Lawrence Rozario, CSC, Dean Prof. Dr. Aloke Kumar Chakraborty, and Deputy Registrar Fr. Ashim Theotonius Gonsalves, CSC.
Later, the distinguished persons along with administrators, department heads, faculty, staff, and students placed floral wreath at the Shaheed Minar to pay homage to the Language Martyrs. A recitation and a group song were also performed on the stage.
During his speech, Fr. Patrick remarked that in most countries of the world, language is deeply intertwined with culture, identity, and national heritage. He said human beings rely on language from childhood to adulthood to express thoughts, shape ideas, build relationships, and become articulate individuals. Language is an essential part of human identity and civilization. It is used in various ways, such as teaching and learning, communication and creative expression, and even in prayers. Remembering those who defended Bangla, he expressed profound respect for their sacrifice and emphasized that it is our solemn duty to uphold their legacy throughout our lives.
Highlighting the history and evolution of the Bangla language, Dr. Aloke Kumar said that 21 February is a glorious and momentous day for the nation. The spirit of Ekushey inspired the Bengali people to raise their voices in defense of their linguistic and cultural rights. He added that the Language Movement played a significant role as one of the stepping stones toward the establishment of an independent Bangladesh.
In his vote of thanks, Fr. Asim said the sacrifices of the Language Martyrs will become even more meaningful if we ensure the proper and dignified use of the Bangla language. At the same time, he emphasized the importance of showing respect for other languages.
