Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB) hosted a thought-provoking panel discussion on May 6, encouraging youth engagement in global human rights advocacy while fostering awareness and empathy.
The discussion, titled “Why Refugees Matter: Human Rights, Protection and the Case for Global Responsibility,” was organized in collaboration with the Department of Law. The event brought together students, faculty, and experts to shed light on the global refugee crisis, with a special focus on the experiences of refugees from Gaza and the Rohingya community residing in Bangladesh.
Dr. Fr. Patrick Daniel Gaffney, CSC, Vice Chancellor of NDUB, skillfully moderated the session and guided the discussion with insight and expertise.
The panel featured four distinguished speakers: Manzoor Hasan OBE, Executive Director of the Centre for Peace and Justice at BRAC University, M Sanjeeb Hossain, PhD, Director of the Research Centre for Peace and Justice at BRAC University, Dr Md Mustakimur Rahman, Associate Professor and Chairman of NDUB’s Department of Law, and Shadika Haque Monia, Assistant Professor in the same department.
In addressing refugee issues, speakers emphasized the importance of upholding human rights, ensuring protection for displaced communities, and promoting shared global responsibility.
Students from various departments attended the discussion and gained a deeper understanding of the struggles faced by refugees, as well as the legal and humanitarian frameworks in place to support them.
