The Department of English at Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB) organized an academic talk on decolonial women writers on July 16, 2026, at the university auditorium.
The program, titled “The Decolonial Women Writers: A Comparative Study of Flora Nwapa, Buchi Emecheta and Mahasweta Devi”, welcomed Dr. Nandini Choudhury Sen, Professor in the Department of English at Bharati College, University of Delhi, as the keynote speaker.
During her lecture, Dr. Sen demonstrated how Flora, Buchi, and Mahasweta had challenged colonial and patriarchal structures while articulating feminist perspectives rooted in their respective societies.
Through a comparative feminist framework, Dr. Sen discussed themes of identity, education, motherhood, activism, language, and women’s agency. Stressing the importance of collective progress, she remarked, “We need feminist men all the time; we cannot move forward without them.”
Among others, Prof. Dr. Fr. Patrick Daniel Gaffney, CSC, Vice-Chancellor of NDUB, Prof. Dr. Fr. Charles B. Gordon, CSC, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Treasurer (Acting), Prof. Tahmina Ahmed, Member of the Academic Council and Professor in the Department of English at the University of Dhaka, Dr. Bro. Subal Lawrence Rozario, CSC, Registrar, Prof. Golam Sarwar Chowdhury, Chairman of the Department of English, Prof. Firdous Azim, Chairperson of the Department of English and Humanities at BRAC University, and Zerin Alam, Professor in the Department of English at the University of Dhaka joined the program.
The event also featured an engaging question-and-answer session with faculty members and students, as well as a cultural performance by students of the department.
