NDUB celebrates Independence Day with patriotic spirit

Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB) organized a memorable Independence Day celebration, fostering a deeper understanding of the day’s significance among the university community and inspiring future generations with a sense of patriotism.

The program, held on March 25, began with a minute of silence in tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War, followed by the hoisting of the national flag and the singing of the national anthem.

The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Fr. Charles Gordon, CSC, Pro-Vice Chancellor, and Dr. Fr. Subash Adam Pereira, CSC, Treasurer and Acting Proctor. Professor Dr. Azizur Rahman, Chairman of the Department of Economics and a valiant freedom fighter, was the keynote speaker on the occasion.

Fr. Charles, in his speech, described the freedom fighters who played pivotal roles in achieving Bangladesh’s independence as extraordinary individuals whose lives, dedication, and sacrifices continue to inspire us. He urged everyone to honor their legacy by committing ourselves to building a prosperous and strong future for our nation.

Highlighting the contributions of the Church and the Christian community in the Liberation War, Fr. Adam stated that although the Christian community is small in number, its contribution to the war was significant. Around 2,200 members of this community spontaneously took part in the war.

“Various Christian missionary hospitals, churches, religious institutions, and educational establishments provided shelter to many freedom fighters and ordinary people. They also provided food, medical care, and other forms of support. Three Catholic fathers were killed by the Pakistani forces for that reason. It is through these sacrifices and the collective efforts of all that we achieved independence. Now, it is our responsibility to protect this hard-earned freedom,” he added.

The keynote speaker Dr. Azizur Rahman shared his experiences from the Liberation War. He recounted how, while studying at Rajendra College in Faridpur, he joined the war, organized resistance in Faridpur, and later received training in India to participate directly in the battle.

Students also contributed to the event, with Aditi Sarker from ELL 23 reciting a poem, and Valentina Elena Biswas from BBA 28A delivering a speech. The celebration concluded with a vote of thanks from Fr. Ashim Theotonius Gonsalves, CSC, Deputy Registrar of NDUB.
