Notre Dame University of Bangladesh (NDUB) celebrated the International Mother Language Day maintaining health protocol on Monday.
Teachers, students and administration members paid homage at the university Shaheed Minar. Multiple clubs of the university also paid tribute to the monument.
The university family also observed a minute of silence in memory of the language movement martyrs of 1952 and hoisted the national flag half-mast.
English department faculty member Dr Jamir Hossain discussed on the theme “Using Technology for Multilingual Learning: Challenges and Opportunities”.
While welcoming, NDUB Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Father Patrick Gaffney, CSC said, “Language is a great human capacity that no other animal has. We humans, among all the creatures that we know on earth are the only ones that flourish. Language evolved together with the human singularity of the brain. This physical organ that humans have which they all animals have a version of it. But only humans have a certain capacity of the brain to think creatively.”
“Humans through intellectual and imaginative exercise are created. And language is one of the great human creations. In other words, languages belong to people who keep them alive, creating new ways, and expressing themselves. Language belongs to everyone who can communicate,” he added.
Fr Patrick said that celebrating an event related to Bangla as Mother Language Day is a way of remembering the people who shared this community as well as brought this community of bottomless speakers and culture to life. And who continue to develop and to cultivate it.
“So all of us here are not only remembering the martyrs who helped create this country by preserving the dignity and the importance, the centrality of the bottom of language, we’re remembering all those who speak every language and every language of Christ has its own tradition,” NDUB VC furthered.
Language is always particular not generic. That’s important clue to our identity. Because we’re not just people. And today Mother Language Day saying here of course, remembers the knowledge, tradition of the Bengali roots, and all of those who defended it, all of those who cultivated it. All of us are here today are honoring the memory, the Holy Cross priest continued.
