Marking the 47th death anniversary of Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB) observed the National Mourning Day, by holding an event with respect and solemnity on Monday, August 15, 2022, at the open space of the campus.
Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Dr. Fr. Patrick Daniel Gaffney, CSC, Treasurer Fr. Subas Adam Pereira, CSC, and Fr. Ashim Theotonius Gonsalves, CSC, Deputy Registrar, Prof. Dr. Aloke Kumar Chakraborty, Dean of Faculty began the program by raising the national flag half-mast. The national anthem was performed by the students at that moment.
Fr. Ashim and Prof Aloke placed floral wrath while Fr. Patrick and Fr. Adam placed a garland around Bangabandhu’s portrait.
Everyone observed a minute of silence before praying for the souls of the martyrs killed on August 15, 1975. Sr. Shagorica Maria Gomes, CSC held a prayer for Bangabandhu as well as all the departed souls of his family.
While addressing, VC Fr. Patrick Daniel Gaffney, CSC, noted in his observation on the day. He said, “Bangabandhu is still in the minds of Bangladeshi people. He had the power to attract and unite people which led his countrymen to fight for their own country… Finally, his direction made this country free.”
“Because of his principles and philosophy, Bangabandhu has grown far more powerful than the living Bangabandhu. Not only Bangladesh, but all oppressed and exploited peoples throughout the world will use Bangabandhu’s philosophy as an inspiration to attain independence,” the VC added.
A documentary on Bangabandhu’s glorious journey of life was presented by the Public Relations Office during the session.
Dr. Md. Azizur Rahman, Professor of Economics shared his memories related to Bangabandhu and the liberation war after a student shared her thoughts.
Prof Azizur said, “Bangabandhu was a very friendly and down-to-earth person. He addressed the individuals with their names. His such character influenced and captivated us as well as the mass to follow his command.”
Song and recitation were performed by the NDUB students remembering Bangabandhu and his martyred family members.
Fr. Ashim delivered the program’s closing remark, saying, the murders didn’t take place to kill a person or a family on August 15, the killing mission basically run to kill the spirit of independence. But the people of this country defended the evil powers. Faculty members, administrative officials, and NDUB students attended the event.
